The workshop on the fintech trend in the context of a digital economy was held at Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU) on the afternoon of November 10th. Industry experts and scholars were invited to the workshop to discuss topics such as the development of the fintech industry, the technological breakthroughs of fintech and its application to a variety of scenarios, fintech risks and the science and technology applied to their regulation, all in the context of a digital economy. Advisor to the Shanghai Municipal Government and Director-General of the Shanghai Fintech Research Center Gu Xiaomin chaired the workshop and delivered a speech. The leadership and faculty of the SLU School of Fintech attended the workshop.

Gu said in her speech that President Xi Jinping stressed at the 34th study conference of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee this year that developing the digital economy is the strategic choice that has to be made for seizing the opportunities presented by the latest round of scientific revolution and industrial transformation. At a time when COVID-19 is still spreading across the globe and the external environment is still confronted with severe challenges, scientific innovation and digital economy have become important drivers to social transformation and high-quality development. Digital economy is being deeply integrated with fintech to create a new industry: digital finance. Faced with the new situation, we have to remain oriented towards both goals and problems, follow the development trend, identify where to drive fintech in the new stage, specify phased goals, and uphold the requirement of digital, smart, green and fair development to promote the transition to financial digitalization and elevate China’s comprehensive strength and core competitiveness in finance.

Presentations were also delivered at the workshop by former deputy governor of Bank of China Wang Yongli, Chairman of Agree Technology Chen Bo, President of Huazhi Capital Li Chunping, Head of CLPS Academy Liu Jun and Founder of Zhongan School Jiang Zhenxing over a range of topics: the principle and highlight of fintech, the strategic relations between digital science and technology and financial service, digital transition of the insurance industry, blockchain as a driver to supply chain finance, and talent development for popular fintech positions.

In the Q&A part, the participants also provided their recommendations over talent, specialty, academic discipline and think-tank development. The workshop offered businesses and universities a good opportunity to have industrial and academic communication, allowing experts and scholars to contribute their ideas to academic development. As the economy goes back to a new normal, SLU will enhance business-school cooperation and communication, deepen industrial-instructional integration and make a better contribution to science and technology talent development and the establishment of a fintech center for Shanghai.
