Xu Ruizhe (admitted in 2019 specializing in Business English) and Cao Ranran (admitted in 2018 specializing in Business English) from the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU) won the first prize in the second round of the 24th “FLTRP · ETIC Cup” National English Debating Competition (East China), which ended on April 10th.
120 university teams from Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong and Anhui were invited to the competition, including those that had always been competent, such as the teams from Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai International Studies University and Zhejiang University. In the competition, two debaters from SLU finally ranked the 12th place and won the first prize after two days of fierce competition in five rounds, and were qualified for the national finals.
Xu Ruizhe and Cao Ranran are the main members of the SLU English Speech and Debate Club. Since the establishment of the English Speech and Debate Club in 2018, under the leadership of Zhang Wen and Yan Yangtian, SLU has organized activities, consolidated the foundation of speech and debate, and participated in the “FLTRP · ETIC Cup” National English Debating Competition every year and won many outstanding achievements. Founded in 1997, the “FLTRP · ETIC Cup” National English Debating Competition is a national English debate competition sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the All-China Students’ Federation, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, and organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The competition adopts a debate system that is in line with the World Universities Debating Championship. The topics are related to many current popular areas, such as politics, ethics, economy, science and technology, and education. The debaters are required to have excellent oral English, logical thinking, flexibility, a broad knowledge reserve and teamwork skills.
