Professor Wang Pinling, Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office, has won the honorary title of “march 8 Red-Banner Pacesetters of Shanghai” in 2017. Since her graduation as an undergraduate student in 07y, 1986, she has always remained at her teaching and teaching management post. The post is ordinary, but she has made prominent achievements in her daily work in the spirit of talent cultivation through teaching, management and service.
She has successively taught a dozen of undergraduate courses such as Mathematical Analysis and Real Variable Functions, and been given the honor of “march 8 Red-Banner Pacesetters in the Educational System of Shanghai” in 2013-2014. She was among the first group of teachers joined the university-level leading talent cultivation program, and the “Research on the Features of the Specialty of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics and the Building of Teaching Teams” under her charge won the university-level second prize for teaching achievements. In 2015, the course Mathematical Analysis undertaken by her, the most important basic course of the mathematics major, was approved as a key course in Shanghai; she also participated in one municipal major teaching reform project, and won the nomination of the university-level distinguished teacher award. In 2016, she led one university-level major teaching reform project and one university-level “mixed” teaching course construction project. In the period of 2015-2016, she successively published two papers on Acta Mathematica Sinica and Annals of Mathematics (both top mathematical journals in domestic), and took part in one National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) project, one business administration (accounting) first-class discipline project of Shanghai and one major discipline project (statistics) of Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce.
As a member of the Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce Branch of the Democratic Progressive Party, she has actively participated in the activities of the branch since the day of admission, taken part in all kinds of seminars, surveys and other activities in brother universities and colleges, and offered plenty of advice and suggestions about the development of the university. In04il, 2016, she was elected as Co-chairman of the Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce Branch of the Democratic Progressive Party.
Staying true to the mission, and always having the big picture in mind
Since joining in work, Wang Pinling has always stayed at the frontline of teaching work, and manifested sheer enthusiasm in her work. From 07y of 2008 to 10ober of 2014, she served as Deputy Dean of the School of Mathematics and Information, and, during the term of office, she vigorously strengthened the teaching management, construction and reform of the school, regulated its teaching management, achieved prominent teaching construction and reform results, and made significant contributions to the teaching development and construction of the school. In particular, when needed by the teaching management post of the university, she was brave to assume the responsibility, took the post of Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office, actively engaged in various teaching reforms launched by the university, made outstanding achievements, and was highly praised by both leaders and colleagues.
Model for others, and excellence at teaching
In the past three decades, she has always held fast to the frontline of teaching. Since holding the post of Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office, the teaching management tasks on her shoulders have become increasingly heavy, but she has always insisted on personally teaching undergraduate students for years, and has successively taught Mathematical Analysis, Real Variable Functions, Advanced Mathematics and many other courses; what is particularly worth mentioning is that her Mathematical Analysis course has been elected as a municipal key course. Being highly skilled and experienced after so many years of teaching, she still takes every course very seriously, and aims to fill them with new contents and teach them by new methods. Her diligent work attitude has fully brought the activity and initiatives of students into play and extremely significantly improved the classroom learning effect, and has been warmly received by students who always elect her among the most popular teachers in the online teaching assessment.
She not only attaches great importance to classroom teaching, but also uses modern information technology to create classroom-based WeChat groups and to provide timely guidance for students about their study and life problems. Students affectionately call her “big sister Pinling”.
Devotion to duty, and practice of educational reform
Shouldering the heavy responsibilities of university-wide teaching construction and teaching reform, Wang Pinling attaches great importance to the university’s teaching reform, and actively explores and practices the teaching reform. Since taking the post of Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office, under the substantial support of the leadership of the university, she has made bold explorations in spite of difficulties, taken the semester-phase system reform as the entry point, carried out talent cultivation scheme reform and curriculum structure & curriculum system reform, increased the proportions of practical teaching and international teaching, promoted the diversification of academic examination assessment and evaluation, and strengthened the intensity of regular grade assessment to improve the regular grades of students. Meanwhile, she has introduced a diversified range of assessment methods to achieve the gradual transition from the traditional “one-for-all” summative evaluation to the whole-process evaluation based on “the integration of formative evaluation and summative evaluation” and “the integration of in-class teaching and extracurricular self-study”. Taking the undergraduate teacher incentive plan as the penetration point, she proceeded to build the teaching team, implemented the undergraduate academic tutorial system, encouraged teachers’ devotion to “student-oriented” and “teaching-centered” teaching work, facilitated teaching reform, teaching construction and teaching research, and further improved talent cultivation quality. Based on the gradual practice of the concept of serving the better development of students, many students have benefited from the teaching reform of the university, and the quality of student resources has seen a steady rise; the university ranks higher among the top universities in terms of student employment rate, and more and more students are now going abroad for study (visiting) programs.
Positive and active, leading as an example
As a humble and positive person, she has a peaceful yet upward altitude, and spares not effort in helping students and other teachers. Going off in the early morning and not returning till late at night, she is always cautious and conscientious at work, always seeking perfection and sometimes even too busy to drink water. She cares about the life and growth of colleagues, and is always ready to provide selfless help to them. Her plain work style, approachable communication style and selfless professional dedication have moved and encouraged every colleague and student around her. She is always a good teacher to students, and a good leader to colleagues.
Selfless dedication, contributing to the growth of young teachers
Wang Pinling used to be responsible person of the Specialty of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, and have cultivated seven young Ph.D. candidates by virtue of her work experience at normal universities and comprehensive universities. She devotes herself to the exploration of specialty features on the one hand, and to the cultivation of young teachers on the other hand. Currently the specialty has a teaching force of two professors, five associate professors and two lecturers, which is rationally structured in terms of teacher age and professional title. So far the specialty has cultivated six classes of undergraduates, and witnessed a rapid development. The team under her leadership has participated in all kinds of academic conferences, and she has created all kinds of academic exchange platforms for them. Among the young teachers instructed by her, one teacher has won a municipal teaching award, two have won university-level teaching awards, four have won university-level scientific research rewards, and four have won NSFC-supported projects.
